About Rockefeller University
At Rockefeller University, bioscience is what we do. It’s all we do. Our exclusive focus is on uncovering the processes that underlie life. How cells work. How genes are controlled. What makes us sick, and what keeps us healthy. The research underway in our labs today is leading to the breakthroughs that will transform medicine tomorrow.
A place of both quiet contemplation and intense scientific energy, our unique campus is the backdrop to a culture that values both independence and collaboration. Discoveries made this year by Rockefeller scientists will someday lead to new medicines and help us conquer infectious diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and many other afflictions. Each represents a step toward a future in which people live longer, healthier lives.

"Rockefeller is a truly special place to develop as a principal investigator. The remarkable students, postdocs, and fellow faculty create a unique environment that empowers me to address ambitious questions that have the potential to lead to transformative findings." - Paul Cohen, Ph.D., Laboratory of Molecular Metabolism
"Working at Rockefeller taught me what it's like to be a full-time scientist. For me, that was an important part of preparing myself to pursue my PhD and a career in research. Having spent two years as an RA, I knew that I was prepared to apply to graduate school, not only because of the knowledge I gained, but because I had gained the experience of working in a world-class laboratory on exciting, important scientific questions. I was eventually accepted to all the graduate programs to which I applied is thanks in no small part to my RA experience, my letter of recommendation, and the skills/knowledge I gained working at RU." - Zintis Inde, Former Research Assistant at Rockefeller University
"Rockefeller commits unparalleled intellectual and practical support to junior faculty, encouraging us to tackle bold and risky scientific questions from the day we begin our labs. Departmental duties do not exist and administrative distractions are minimized so we have the opportunity to fully focus on our research. The lack of departmental structure at Rockefeller means that my close colleagues and neighbors are not necessarily in my field, a unique organization that promotes broad and multidisciplinary thinking about science." - Vanessa Ruta, Ph.D., Laboratory of Neurophysiology and Behavior
"Rockefeller is something of a hidden gem. I'm always amazed by the luxuries we have: intimate community, extreme prestige (number of Nobel prizes and laureates on campus), incredible funding and core facilities, and then there are the perks - free beer, river view, living in NYC. When you enter this campus, people treat you as a peer, even as a Research Assistant. There are no undergrads to 'compete' with so that as an RA, you become the natural and only recipient of all the mentoring and lab education available from postdocs and professors." - Eliza Adams, Former Research Assistant at Rockefeller University
"Rockefeller is a truly special place to do science. Its amazing history, unique academic structure, gorgeous campus, prime location are all factors that attracted me here. But what Rockefeller impresses me the most is its people. I constantly draw inspiration from world-renowned pioneers, my fellow junior faculty, vibrant students and postdocs. They are ambitious, persistent, approachable, and fun. These people are what define The Rockefeller University. Once you are here, you become part of it." - Shixin Liu, Ph.D., Laboratory of Nanoscale Biophysics and Biochemistry
"Working as an RA was a tremendously rewarding experience, one that not only convinced me to pursue independent research professionally, but also exposed me to uncountable cutting-edge scientific methodologies and afforded me the opportunity to serve as a co-author on five papers in the two years I worked there. Being able to work in such a large and high-profile lab, with so many people at different career stages and from diverse scientific backgrounds, really allowed me to see what being a scientist was like, both on and off the bench. I owe the vast majority of my scientific technical and evaluative skills to the many people in Charlie Rice's lab, who took the time to teach me their craft." - Joshua Horwitz, Former Research Assistant at Rockefeller University
"Rockefeller offers colleagues who have seeded entirely new fields, students and post-docs with bold visions for the future, an administration and faculty that are on the same side, a long tenure clock that facilitates taking risks, a small community where everyone knows you, a funding approach that promotes doing experiments over writing grants, and a department-less structure that yields out-of-the-box collaborations. I can't imagine a better environment for discovering something big, or at least having fun while trying." - Gaby Maimon, Ph.D., Laboratory of Integrative Brain Function
