About REI
Our history: It all started with an ice axe
We’ve been your outdoor co-op for 82 years. REI was founded in 1938 when a group of 23 climbing friends, united by their love for the outdoors, decided to source quality and affordable gear for their adventures.
Today the REI community has 19 million lifetime members, over 13,000 employees and 165 locations in 39 states and the District of Columbia.
While much has changed since REI’s beginnings, our passion for life outside lives on in everything we do.
REI Co-op: A different kind of company
Being a member-owned co-operative allows us to focus on shared values, not share value.
Annually, more than 70 percent of our annual profits are invested back into the outdoor community through dividends to REI members, employee profit-sharing and retirement, and investments in nonprofits dedicated to the outdoors.
Every year since 2015, we close all our stores on Black Friday. We give all our employees a day off to #OptOutside with family and friends on the busiest retail day of the year. We continue this tradition because we believe in putting purpose before profits. More than 700 organizations and millions of people have joined us. We hope you will, too.
By staying true to our roots, we've earned a place on FORTUNE magazine's list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" every year since the rankings began in 1998. We work hard to earn our reputation for quality and integrity every day.

REI is a truly unique and special place to work. I have been fortunate to work in the Retail field as well as HQ based roles. Regardless of the role I have served, I have consistently worked among amazing teams, committed to respect and quality, comprised of dynamic personality and experience, as well as a great commitment and passion for the outdoors. Such a combination of work and play, and support of community is rare in business. For that reason, I never feel like I have to work.

Workforce Diversity
We believe that the co-op—and the outdoors—should be places where everyone can feel welcome and be themselves. At REI, diversity and inclusion are outcomes. They are behaviors we need to model to ensure employees and customers feel welcome, can participate fully and bring their ideas, creativity and feedback forward with candor.
We recognize that we have work to do—as a co-op, as individuals and as a society—to make that a reality. We value equity and are actively striving to shift the mindset that the way things have been created is perfect and that people of all backgrounds should naturally fit into how things are. We recognize that the way “things are” may work for some, but won’t work for many. We’re committed to equity and need to make changes so that everyone can contribute and participate.
We believe we will serve our customers best by having staff that creates a sense of belonging for our current and future customers. Employees who provide thought partnership from diverse perspectives will empower the co-op to provide superior products and expert service, in a way that that meets the varied needs of our customer base.
Princess Ayers-Stewart
Director, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Greater Seattle Area
“ Through the Co-op Way, we create a culture of belonging by valuing difference, building community and driving equity from the inside out. We have a responsibility to create spaces for BIPOC and other historically marginalized groups to connect, grow and develop within the co-op and in the outdoors."
Community Outreach
At REI Co-op, believe that the opportunity to enjoy time outdoors ought to be available for everyone. While these tenets are core to who we are as a co-op, it’s also true that across the country, opportunities to enjoy the outdoors aren’t always equitable. Most importantly, too few Americans are exposed to the breadth of meaningful ways that the outdoors can be experienced; from neighborhood bike rides to walking on the beach to summiting high peaks> Life outside has too much good to offer – to individuals, to communities, and for our planet – for access to remain limited. Also, In the midst of a climate crisis, the leadership of underrepresented trailblazers in that work is often overlooked by and remains disconnected from mainstream efforts.
That’s why we are helping to lead an industry-wide effort to ensure that the full range of people who have a passion for the outdoors feel they belongand safe there, and that all voices are meaningfully represented in the fight for a life outside by:
- Investing in work that removes the barriers to belonging underrepresented communities face outside
- Delivering locally and culturally relevant products, experiences and expertise to equip and inspire the next generation of outdoor stewards
- Working to cultivate a member and employee base that is demographically representative of the communities we serve
- Leading efforts across our industry to engage people and communities historically underrepresented in outdoor media and culture
Here are some of the ways the Co-op is working to make good on our promise of a life well lived – for everyone:
- Helping more than 350,000 people across the country get outside through day programming in 2019. In addition, last year we had more than 300 custom-designed adventure travel itineraries worldwide, and 20% growth in the number of people who joined our trips.
- Expanding our online library of expert advice, featuring diverse voices from all over the country, assuring that, regardless of your level of expertise, we have all the information you need to learn new skills, choose and maintain gear, prep for your trips and have amazing adventures.
- Offering more rental and used gear, both lowering price points and slowing the pace at which that product might find its way to landfill. Learn more.
- Investing in research about how time in nature improves human health, to show that time outdoors is good for you.
- Supporting organizations that connect underrepresented groups to the outdoors through the REI Foundation and co-op philanthropy,
- Partnering with local and national organizations to foster a more inclusive outdoors by connecting hundreds of thousands of people with locally and culturally relevant outdoor activities.

We believe that it’s in the wild, untamed and natural places that we find our best selves, so our purpose is to awaken a lifelong love of the outdoors, for all.
The Co-op Way was developed to guide employees on how we need to lead, behave and operate, together. This isn’t simply words on paper, it’s how we behave. And behavior shapes our culture.
These are our Values in Action:
- We fight for life outdoors
- We are here to do our best work
- We go further, together
- We start from a place of respect
- We strive for harmony in work and life
- We believe the outdoors is for all
- We courageously embrace change
- We hold ourselves to a higher standard
- We are all responsible for the Co-op's results
A lot of what’s in the Co-op Way is aspirational - it’s about your journey, your team’s journey and the co-op’s journey.
The values in action are meant to be taken as a whole, rather than stand alone. They’re intended to work interdependently.
